What Is Data Saturation? The PRICE Model Explained Step by Step

It is achieved through three linguistic qualities of your quotations and keywords. Velocity is the number of times keywords are repeated across participants. Viscosity is the richness of language — participants explaining the same narrative using different words, which enriches the concepts you develop. Vibrancy is the presence of different perspectives on the same matter, including the emotional range (satisfaction, confusion, hesitancy) expressed in quotes. When you select keywords and codes with all three in view, you can perceive the data from many viewpoints — and the first element of saturation is reached. Practical safeguards at this stage: prefer power quotes (“the most compelling bits of data you have”), avoid citing one or two sources repeatedly, and report your perspectives explicitly.

R — Recapitulation

Recapitulation summarises the main findings in the form of the codes and themes that have emerged. Its goal is a clear, concise summary as academic concepts: examining the data to formulate ideas based on the detected codes and arranging material so it can be comprehended and interpreted. Visual aids — matrices, diagrams, concept maps — help here. Recapitulation is the bridge between data collection and final conceptualisation, and it requires the iterative back-and-forth that makes thematic analysis an ongoing cycle rather than a single pass.

I — Integration

Integration connects and makes sense of the themes and codes that have emerged. This is where you decide how findings relate to each other and to prior literature — using theoretical frameworks to develop concepts from your categories, and revising codes and themes into new concepts based on the research findings. Codes and themes must remain grounded in the real data throughout.

C — Crystallisation

Crystallisation asks you to take a break from the analysis and structure your connected themes and codes into figures or tables. Stepping back is the test: if the structure holds — every theme connected, every connection supported by data — you are close to saturation. If pieces do not fit, the analysis returns to the earlier stages.

E — Edification

Edification addresses the final question: how do the results, presented as a table or framework, contribute to the improvement of understanding of the research topic? Saturation is complete only when the analysis demonstrably adds to knowledge — when the data have been used to their full potential to achieve the research aim.

Using PRICE with Systematic Thematic Analysis

PRICE was designed as the companion to the six-step STA process: STA tells you what to do at each analytical step; PRICE tells you when those steps have exhausted the data. Together they take you from raw transcripts to a saturated, defensible conceptual model — and give you the language to report every part of that journey to reviewers.
